Spirits industry in Ireland

The Irish spirits industry has a long and proud history with the manufacturing of Irish spirits going as far back as the 6th century. The industry has continued over the years to develop its products and in 1974 created a novel category of spirit drinks called cream liqueurs.

Our brands are known throughout the world, making the Irish spirits industry a significant player in global markets. Our EU geographical indicators for Irish Whiskey, Irish Cream Liqueur and Irish Poitin/Poteen require that these products are made to the highest standards here on the island of Ireland, supporting the employment of over 14,700 people in manufacturing, distribution, hospitality and retailing sectors, as well as many farming families through the purchase of raw materials.

In 1997, Irish spirits companies came together to create the Irish Spirits Association (ISA) to promote the interests of the industry and ensure that optimal national and international trading conditions exist for the Irish spirits industry.

Today, Ireland is the 8th largest spirits producer in Europe, manufacturing approximately 190 million bottles of spirits per year with Irish Whiskey being one of the fastest growing spirits categories in the world.

A sustainable business environment must exist for the Irish spirits industry to ensure its continued growth and to secure direct and indirect employment and future investment in the sector.
