IRISH WHISKEY DISTILLERIES TO ATTRACT MORE THAN 190,000 TOURISTS TO COUNTIES CORK, CLARE, KERRY AND THE SURROUNDING REGION
The Irish Whiskey Association’s South West Regional Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy was launched by the Minister of State for Food, Forestry and Horticulture Andrew Doyle today [JUNE 12th] at Irish Distillers’ Midleton Distillery.
The Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy aims to work with distilleries around the South West to attract over 190,000 of international tourists and create hundreds of jobs in the region.
The massive growth in Irish whiskey sales and Irish whiskey tourism means that local distilleries will soon directly support 289 jobs across the South West, with many more jobs being created in the hospitality sector as a result.
Speaking at the event at Midleton Distillery, Minister Doyle said, “I am delighted on behalf of the Government to launch the South West Regional Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy. Irish whiskey is one of Ireland’s most valuable drinks exports and there is an incredible opportunity to leverage Irish whiskey’s success abroad to attract thousands more tourists to Ireland.
“The Government is fully supportive of the Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy’s aim to treble the number of visitors to 1.9 million annually by 2025 which is expected to deliver €1.3 billion to rural and urban communities all over Ireland every year and create hundreds of jobs.”
Patricia Callan, Director of the Alcohol Beverage Federation of Ireland (ABFI)said, “Irish whiskey distilleries are positioning themselves as key tourist attractions. Already, Dingle Distillery and the Jameson Experience Midleton are succeeding in attracting more than 137,000 visitors every year.
“Our projections show that when Clonakilty Distillery and West Cork Distillers open their visitor centres, the number of whiskey tourists travelling to Counties Cork, Clare, Kerry and around the South West will exceed 190,000 visitors every year.”
“With the Irish Whiskey Tourism Strategy, I believe we have the opportunity to create a world-class tourism offering that encourages high-spending international tourists to spend time in distillery towns in the South West,” said Patricia Callan.
Carol Quinn, who manages Irish Distillers’ archives at the Midleton Distillery added, “The launch of this dedicated regional tourism strategy today is yet another endorsement of the global success story that has developed around Irish whiskey, and the commitment that exists across the industry to further fuel the global Irish whiskey renaissance.
“Since 1992, we have provided visitors to Midleton with a journey through the history of Irish whiskey and Irish Distillers’ heritage at the home of Irish whiskey, which dates back to the 1800s. We’re proud to have welcomed 2.8 million visitors through our doors during that time, and now, together with other established and emerging distilleries in the region, we are excited to be playing a part in realising the visitor targets set out in the Irish Whiskey Association’s tourism strategy. This is good news for Irish whiskey, good news for businesses and communities in the South West and good news for Ireland.”
